Inappropriate Elimination

by ANDREW M. STREIBER, DVM

Q:  My cat has been urinating outside her litter box.  Could she have a urinary tract infection, or is it something else?

A:  While it is true a urinary tract infection has the potential to cause cats to urinate outside of their litter box, there are multiple health issues that may cause inappropriate elimination.  We must consider chronic kidney disease, renal failure, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, behavioral symptoms and feline lower urinary tract diseases ( F.L.U.T.D. or sterile inflammation of the bladder) as well.
