Despite the fact that Lassie is a female character, the first dog to play the role was a male. One year-old, purebred collie “Pal” earned $250 a week as Lassie, while costar Elizabeth Taylor received only a $100. After Pal retired at age five, his direct descendants inherited the iconic role.
