Rin Tin Tin  (1918-1932)

RIN TIN TINSilent movie star, Rin Tin Tin was the first canine to make it big in the movie business, and largely responsible for the German Shepherd becoming a popular breed.  Rescued by an American from a French kennel destroyed in World War I, Rin Tin Tin is credited with saving Warner Brothers Studios from going bankrupt with his first starring role in 1923’s “Where the North Begins”.  He appeared in 27 films, four of which were with sound, and achieved international fame, allegedly being voted winner of a best actor Oscar in 1929 that was eventually awarded to a human.
